This courtyard for the headquarters of Canyon Bikes in Koblenz was a collaboration with Studioilse and with Michael Garcon of Bureau Goetz. The courtyard sits between a house and a Hinterhaus (between-house). Glass, steel, timber, and perforated brick screens all play on the theme of hinter- space. The planting is informal and based on simple pleasures – for instance, the ability to stroll out of the office and eat raspberries from the bush.
The ground plane is a reconfiguration of the materials that were already on site. Some of these were left undisturbed, and the tension between these found elements and the new orthogonal landscape creates strange rhythms and patterns. At the centre of the court is a long meeting table formed of Nagelfluhe, a conglomerate local stone derived from the sediment of the nearby Rhine.
